Tick Threats in the Gateway City

Missouri’s humid summers and heavily wooded suburban areas create the perfect breeding ground for ticks. These parasitic arachnids wait in tall grasses and shrubs to latch onto passing humans and pets. Because they feed on blood, they are primary vectors for several severe local diseases.

Common Missouri Tick Species & Dangers

  • The Lone Star Tick: Easily identified by the distinct white dot on the adult female’s back, this is the most aggressive tick in our area. Bites from the Lone Star tick are notorious for transmitting Ehrlichiosis, Heartland virus, Bourbon virus, and causing Alpha-gal syndrome, which triggers a severe, lifelong allergy to red meat.
  • The American Dog Tick: Frequently found on family pets and in overgrown fields, this species is a known carrier of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) and Tularemia.
  • The Blacklegged (Deer) Tick: Much smaller than other species, making them difficult to spot. These are the infamous carriers of Lyme disease.
